Sayed Ismaeel Shihabudheen Pookoya Thangal (Panoor Thangal)

Sayed Ismaeel Shihabudheen Pookoya Thangal popularly known as Panoor Thangal has contributed immensely to the cause of the upliftment of Muslim community. His sincere and restless efforts have brought about drastic changes in the field of education. Combining the better aspects of material and spiritual elements to it.
It is indeed surprising to not that it was a period ranging from 1960 to 1970 when the Muslims were strongly against modern education, terming it as anti-Muslim because of its too much western influence. in such circumstances the creative leadership of ‘Panoor Thangal’ who had a clear vision of life and a great mission of fulfill came to the rescue of Muslim community from the clutches of ignorance and superstitions.
In 1970, under his guidance an educational institution known as 'Saqafathul Islam Academy' started functioning at Ummathoor in Calicut district. in 1974 followed another institution namely JAMIA ZAHRA at Thangalpeedika at Mokeri panchayath in Kannur district. Now Jamia Zahra has already completed long 30 years of selfless service enriching the educational and cultural life of Muslim community.
Tough he had to face stiff objection from his critics at the beginning, gradually they began to support him wholeheartedly to become his ardent followers. His sense of sacrifice, iron determination and indomitable willpower endeared him to even his arch enemies. He always stood for what he seemed right, unmindful of the challenges to face, whatever it may.
His attempts brought about revolutionary changes in the field of education by creating a team of well-equipped Islamic scholars who are fully responsive to the changes taking place in our social and cultural life. Actually it was silent revolution influencing our community to change their attitude to modern education in tune with the changing needs of modern life without losing its ideological and spiritual back ground.
Panoor Thangal authored a number of books, among them the most notable is the interpretation of Q’uran in Arabic in seven volumes.
